The optimization of a portfolio relative to its benchmark is an important step and complementary to the pure risk / return optimization. In doing so, personal preferences or key focus between the different parameters tracking error, standard deviation and expected return can be defined. Once optimizations of multiple targets of the three dimensions are visualized they are understandable and insightful.
